Inside a former Mennonite Church at 291 South 4th Street, Columbia, PA “ (still owned by the Mennonite church, but now an outreach center with a free medical clinic in the back of the building) was an electric atmosphere the first night of Ned Somerville’s “Columbia Music Night” on a snowy Saturday, October 29.

The open space buzzed and rocked with original and folk music; despite the snow and slush, over 20 people showed up to applaud the musicians performing a mixed program of folk music and electric guitar original music.  The hall was loaded with food and snacks donated by stand holders at the Columbia Market House and Andy’s Market - blueberry pie, apple pie, cookies, even hot dogs and sauerkraut. The event was FREE!

Some weather-caused cancellations by scheduled performers left more time for covers and original songs and improvisations by a month-old group named “The Mighty Voice and the Associated Wolf.” Lead singer and guitarist is Micah Krieder, 15, who said his Columbia High music teacher, Richard Jenson is his inspiration. Other members of the group are Nick Singleton on drums, 15;  guitarist Zachary Will, 15; Read the rest of this entry »

AARP offers free driving safety courses for veterans and dependents

In Education, Everyday Living, Opportunities on October 31, 2011 at 5:39 am

To recognize and thank military veterans for their service, the AARP Driver Safety Program is offering a free classroom course to all military personnel — active duty, retired, guard or reserve — regardless of age, from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30, 2011.

This offer, which waives the normal course registration fee, is available to individuals who serve or have served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard/Reserves or Coast Guard. Spouses (including widows and widowers) are also eligible to take the classroom course, free of charge.

How can you receive the free classroom course?

You can find a classroom course location by checking these Lancaster County course location offerings or by calling 888-AARP-NOW (888-227-7669).  Pre-registration is required and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Be sure to mention the “Veterans Promotion.” When you show up for the course, you will need to present a form of military identification. Examples include but are not limited to a military ID, discharge papers (DD Form 214), American Legion card, dependent ID card (DD Form 1173), or a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) card.

When can you take the course?

To receive the free driver safety course, the entirety of the course must occur during the month of November. Two-day courses that start in October and finish in November, or start in November and finish in December, do not qualify for this promotion.

Can you take the course for free in November, even though you are not a first-time participant?

Yes. Any eligible veteran, military member or military spouse or may take any version of the Driver Safety Program classroom course for free in November. This includes the four-hour, four-hour refresher, six-hour, or eight-hour classroom course.
