“Boat launch gets helping hand”

“It was a chance meeting.

“Boy Scout Troop 267 of Silver Springs was canoeing down the Susquehanna and had stopped at the Blue Rock Boat Launch at Washington Boro.

“Jeff Schmidt, a waterways conservation officer for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, happened to be at the landing.

“For some time, Schmidt had wanted a place to display important information about fishing and boating regulations and safety at the increasingly popular boat ramp, which happens to be located in an Important Bird Area on the Conejohela Flats.

“The small ramp is used by local boaters who don’t want to drive all the way to Long Level in York County to reach Lake Clarke. It’s also used by waterfowl hunters in the fall and winter, and is a key launch site for the Blue Rock Fire Department’s River Rescue Team for river rescues.

“Fortunately, Darian Erb, the troop’s senior patrol leader, was looking to do a community service project as he vies for Eagle Scout status.

“Erb, 16, a sophomore at Hempfield High School, got busy. He held fund-raisers and hit up about a dozen local businesses for materials, equipment and time.

The Lancaster County Bird Club gave Erb a $400 grant for materials.

“On Saturday, April 21, about two dozen people, including Erb’s fellow Scouts and their families, set to work. By day’s end, they had erected two sheltered kiosks in the boat launch’s parking lot, owned by the Lancaster Area Sewer Authority.

The daytime single-lane restriction for westbound traffic is necessary so that construction crews can repair potholes prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
