today’s news and happenings … April 10, 2011

from the Lancaster Sunday News … April 10 … Katie Shelley wins the women’s title in Garden Spot Marathon. This photo,
is from an article in today’s Sunday News about yesterday’s marathon. The article continues, “Katie Shelly, 22, from Columbia, captures the women’s title in her first marathon in 3:16:46.” 1,010 runners competed in the competition.

“‘Running the marathon was better than I expected,’ she said. ‘It was really scenic, and I enjoyed it a lot.’”

and there is more of interest in today’s Lancaster Sunday News:
  • Chip Smedley, the County’s Community Watchdog, has included this piece, “Third strike in Columbia,” in his LANCASTER LOOKOUT column. It is about “problems with individuals in a neighboring rental unit who, they say, were continually violating borough codes.” The Watchdog made contact with “Borough Code Enforcement Officer Jeff Helm;” the column (on page B11 of the newspaper) includes this comment from Helm: “they just had the police called to that property, and that was their third strike, so I’m preparing the letter for the tenants and the land lord now.”
  • Marietta resident, Donna L. Scanlon’s letter to the editor takes the editor to task for observations about coverage of an academic event.

DEEDS RECORDED. BHI Properties, LLC bought two more properties in Columbia; according to the Lancaster County Website, they now own 21 properties.

At least two news papers are tackling the issue of a bloated, expensive Pennsylvania legislature. The Lancaster Sunday News (“At public expense –
Pennsylvania legislative staff size makes for budget target” and “County’s staffers number 58 – Half of $2.4 million payroll goes to Senate offices”) and the Reading Eagle (“Legislative staff an easy target for critics”) articles provide excellent insight into the high-price Pennsylvanians pay for lawmakers.

and there is more on this in the Harrisburg Patriot News … Some employees of Pennsylvania Legislature may receive pay hikes as unionized workers, teachers are asked to freeze pay” and “3 Harrisburg-area lawmakers’ staff members earn more than $100,000.” We wrote about this “we got ours; you won’t get yours” phenomenon last month.

from the York Dispatch, April 9 … “Spring Grove votes down budget with tax hike.”

Beautifying the area! Dianna and the folks from Musser’s Landscapes continue to beautify the space on Route 462 just east of Columbia; we snapped these pictures as they were mulching this week.

Hope you are right, Dianna and that spring really is around the corner. This has been a l-o-n-g-g-g-g-g cold winter!
