seeking normalcy in war

Ever since we posted this picture of Columbian Jared Hughes with his pet, we have been remembering experiences in another war, now a long time ago. For those who have been “there,” the imprint will always seem like yesterday.

For the World War II veterans, the Korean War veterans, the Gulf War veterans, the Viet Nam veterans, the Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans and all hostile engagements … the experiences of war never go away. We are forever the age we were. The smells, the sounds, the memories remain as they were.

We went looking for the memory of the pet in another time in another place!

We found more pictures from other more distant soldiers from more distant wars. It seems that warriors  have always found reminders of home and semblance of normalcy by loving a pet in the insanity that is war. (We found the pictures shown below at this website.)

[Editor’s NOTE]: We happened upon this Website, Operation Noble Foster. When young men and women are called to military service in other places, what happens to their pets. Operation Noble Foster states “our desire is to help the US military and paramilitary personnel retain ownership of their cats, have these pets cared for in a loving manner in an individual foster home while their owners are absent, and have these cats returned to their owners once their owners return. We consider prevention of relinquishment to be an important aspect of rescue. As a result, we operate Operation Noble Foster to provide our military with an alternative to relinquishment if their duty-call means they must leave their cats for a prolonged period of time.
