today’s news … Thursday, April 21

today’s news and information gleanings from here and there! Today’s Weather!   Today in History!
  • Riverfront Property disposition reportedly will be on the agenda for the recently advertised “Special Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 7:00 pm to appoint terms for Board Members of the Market House Historic Trust and any other necessary Borough business.” This is what the mayor wrote about that in August of 2010: FOOD FOR THOUGHT August 5, 2010.
  • Columbia Borough Finance Committee meeting has been rescheduled to April 21, 2011 at 6:00pm
  • “The Senate unanimously adopted a bill late last week to stiffen the criminal penalties for companies that knowingly violate food safety laws.”
  • from the New England Journal of Medicine: “Hard Choices — Alternatives for Reining in Medicare and Medicaid Spending”
  • from Fire Engineering magazine (April, 2011) : “The One Percenters.” Bobby Helton’s, the editor of Fire Engineering magazine, column about those who teach says, “Teachers are that one in 100 (one percenters). Teachers are warriors against ignorance, against apathy, and against the status quo. Teachers will help solve the staffing crisis. Teachers will help develop the new tactics. Teachers are those whom the next generation is looking to lay those strong foundations, for guidance, for solutions. Teachers are one in 100. Teachers are the warriors who will bring the others home.” This is a really well written opinion column.
