Alana Fischer wins Steinman academic scholarship

Alana Fischer, daughter of Sherri and George Fischer of Columbia, has been awarded one of only three of the annually presented James Hale Steinman Memorial Scholarship Funds. She won the award of a $20,000 scholarship presented for “seniors who achieved academic and community service honors while attending high school.” Alana will be graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in June [EDITOR’S NOTE: Lancaster Catholic’s graduation is planned for May 26, 2011 at 7 P.M.; we apologize for this inaccuracy in the initial article.]

Alana also was awarded a $300 scholarship award from the Columbia Knights of Columbus.

Alana plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh and major in nursing. She is a member of the cheerleading squad, Student Council, Student Ambassadors, Link Crew, Interact Club, a Homecoming Queen candidate, National Honor Society, chorus and the spring musical cast.

Alana grandparents, Gerald and Lareene Fischer, are also Columbia residents. According to her proud grandmother, Alana “was selected to be a majorette for their band.” Her father, a 30-year employee of Intelligencer Printing Co., is a pressman.

  1. Important update: BOTH SETS of Alana’s grandparents are proud of her; we did not have the names when we prepared the article; maternal grandparents Gerald and Rose Crouse of Maytown are equally proud of Alana’s achievements. We apoligize for this omission.
