  • From the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/New Era: Letter to the Editor from Columbian, Patrick Boerger– “Finding out where we go from here – When human civilization first began, there was no money. The only exchange was barter of usable goods. Then people learned to use gold to represent those goods. After that, they minted golden coins, which linked the gold to the strength of the nation. Then, coins were phased out in favor of paper money representing gold.

“Today, the bills in your wallet represent not gold, but the guarantee of the federal government. Further, most money today exits only as an electronic record — no cash. In light of this long history of change, does anyone really expect the current economic system to last forever? Apparently they do.

“The recent recession — European bankruptcies — may be a sign that the next change is in the works. Instead of trying to figure out how to put things back the way they were, why don’t people try to figure out where they should be going?”

  • From the York Dispatch: Well said, “The best present is often the present you never receive.” This is the last line in the sports editorial yesterday. The York Dispatch’s sports editor says it well in “Pryor’s Penn State snub now seems like a gift.” – “Taxpayer identity theft is soaring; York woman talks about her case.”

  • From the Harrisburg Patriot-News: There is a story we’ve been following from another county; involves a group of jurisdictional politicians who evidently made a contested political call to de-commission a volunteer fire department. What is interesting is to read the comments following today’s article. –  “Midstate schools face threat of closure due to budget cuts
