State inspection of eating places includes schools

This article from yesterday’s York Dispatch mentions that schools must be inspected for food serving compliance with state laws.

“The state’s Department of Agriculture conducts yearly inspections of food-serving establishments to ensure public safety and safe food-handling practices.

“Schools are inspected twice per year, more often if complaints are received, according to Lydia Johnson, director of the Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratories.

“Whether or not an establishment is considered compliant or non-compliant is the discretion of the inspector, ‘because they’re in the establishment,’ Johnson said.

“There are, however, several violations for which inspectors should automatically consider establishments non-compliant, she said. Called ‘critical violations,’ they include food temperature issues, issues with chemicals and how they’re handled, and employee hygiene.

“‘Establishments found to be non-compliant are re-inspected ‘in a timely manner,’ she said.

“Depending on the severity of the situation, inspectors and their supervisors could file citations or close an establishment, Johnson said.

“Below is a list of establishments listed as compliant for inspections conducted May 21-31. No establishments were listed as non-compliant for the period.” [Read the rest of the article here.]
