today’s news and information gleanings from here and there! Today’s Weather!   Today in History!

Quote for today“This lack of professionalism and committment to discovering the facts on the part of the (newspaper) is systematic and has enabled local governments, school boards and businesses to do whatever they want in the (area) because the sole “free press” has fallen down on the job and the light of day will never be revealed.” – part of a reader’s comment to an article in an eastern Pennsylvania newspaper.

  • More on unusual nicknames … Reaves Goehring Jr., retired Columbia High School history teacher, recalls George Erisman. Erisman ran a doll hospital at 315 W. Orange St. The June 17 Scribbler featured Erisman (1863-1961) and his doll hospital. As founder of the Lancaster Fencibles Civil War re-enactor unit, Goehring was fascinated more by Erisman’s collection of original Civil War uniforms than by his doll-repair operation. Erisman provided uniforms and other clothing as part of a costume-rental operation. Goehring also knew ‘Dr.’ John Price, a Lancaster city firefighter and first-rate naturalist. He curated the North Museum. Price told Goehring that some folks called the doll repairman ‘Mossback Erisman’’ because he wore one coat for so many years that “it got green on the back.” (Jack Brubaker’s column, The Scribbler in the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/New Era)
