Ron Miller returning to Columbia

Shrewsbury Twp. manager resigns because of ‘politics’
AMANDA DOLASINSKI The York Dispatch

Shrewsbury Township’s manager has announced his resignation amid pressure to leave, he said Thursday.

Ron Miller began the job in January and will leave by the end of the month. He will be returning to the public works post with Columbia borough in Lancaster County that he left for the Shrewsbury job.

“It’s unfortunate. I had great hopes to win the people over,” he said. “It just didn’t happen. Politics got in the way.”

Columbia Manager Norman Meisky confirmed Miller will be returning starting Aug. 1.

In 2010, Shrewsbury Township supervisors decided the township’s population had grown enough to hire a manager. They approved Earl Schuckman as an interim administrator while they searched for a permanent manager, supervisor Ed Hughes said.

Miller was hired after an interview process in 2010; his term began Jan. 1, 2011.

Although Hughes said Schuckman did not apply for the position, he speculates some of the supervisors were disappointed Schuckman was not hired.

Hughes declined to speak on behalf of the board, but said he is personally disappointed Miller has chosen to leave. Other supervisors did not return calls for comment.

“I would have loved him to stay,” Hughes said. “I really believe he was making a difference and things were going good in the township. It’s the worst thing that could have happened to the township right now.”

As part of his resignation, Miller was required to give the township 30 days notice; his last day will be July 29. Advertisements for the vacancy will most likely be posted, Hughes said.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: Appears one snake pit can be much like another. Here’s a reader comment at one of the York County Internet blog sites: “AW HOGWASH! You call that three ring circus “civility restored”??? I’ll remind you that in January YOU looked all of us in the eye and lied to our faces about Ron Miller’s credentials. You told us all three times that he was the Columbia Township Manager…YOU’RE A LIAR! Civility? when you get everyone’s dander up with your deceit and unanswered questions, you like to agitate and antagonize and act like the little tough guy. The winter meetings with Ed Hughes as ringleader were on the verge of a brawl. You and Cindy should stop blowing our money and carry out your campaign promises and try to tell a few truths, maybe then you can say “civility restored”.

and another comment: “Based on what little experience I have had with them, I would say that decisions were made at the direction of an arrogant, seemingly uninformed superintendent and the board seems to follow lock step.”

and there is this letter sent from citizens to Ron:  shrewsbury township snakepit – at a minimum, the citizens demonstrate a “feistiness” not seen in Columbia.]

  1. So council tonight justifies their decision to hire Ron back and not have to advertise the position because they knew they were going to hire him regardless. So how does a veteran ever get hired if all hiring was done thru the back door now instead of the traditional front door. Shouldn’t government bodies HAVE to advertise ALL positions? Doesn’t this ultimately discriminate against veterans?

  2. So, this article was written on July 9th, 2 days before Council voted to bring Ron Miller back and Norm Meiskey confirms the hiring BEFORE Council votes to do so saying in this article Mr. Miller will return to the Borough on August 1st! More proof that Norm Meiskey runs this Borough and this Council just agrees with anything he wants! Meiskey and his backdoor politics have got to go! So much for transparency and fairness in Columbia Izzy, they’ll do whatever they want! Let’s hope for new faces on the next Council who will have the intestinal fortitude to stand up to Meiskey and his puppets, because the day of reckoning for the taxpayers of this Borough is coming if we continue with these bozo’s in place!
