Quote for today… “The backdrop for the chaos was my childhood. The context for cold-blooded murder was my personal roots. – Adam Goldstein, reporter for the Aurora Sentinel, Aurora, Colorado,
in this column, “When horror hits home.”
- Here it comes! “The NCAA announced Sunday that it will issue sanctions against Penn State in the wake of a scathing report that found that top university officials buried child sex abuse allegations against a now-convicted retired assistant and led to the tearing down of the famed statue of once-sainted coach Joe Paterno.” – AP report
- Joe must go! “The famed statue of Joe Paterno was taken down from outside the Penn State football stadium Sunday as the NCAA announced it would be issuing sanctions against the university whose top officials were accused in a scathing report of burying child sex abuse allegations against a now-convicted retired assistant.” – ABC News
- “I never thought that would happen here” does happen. The Aurora, Colorado mass shooting could have happened anywhere. Life-threatening incidents are part of living in the world; it’s prudent to practice “situational awareness” and preparedness for an all-risk / threat / vulnerability environment. Social media, traditional media and the Internet are abuzz with suggestions and how-to guidance. Here’s what the Department of Homeland Security has had in place for this kind of risk (an active shooter) for a while. And here’s a link to a free online course entitled “Active Shooter: What You Can Do” from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

- Lack of transparency and information flow in Millersville, too. “A burglary spree has folks in Millersville and Manor Township on edge after at least 19 break-ins over the last few months, as the Sunday News reported last week. Too bad it took the newspapers to let other citizens know about the crime wave. Before an Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Erastory last month, back when the burglary count stood at about a dozen, the only reports about the trouble were through word of mouth.“In June, Millersville residents went to borough council to complain that they were being kept in the dark about crime, particularly the burglaries. Mayor Richard Moriarty acknowledged the problem but said he and police made a “conscious decision” not to change the borough’s policies on reporting crime to citizens.“The mayor also was quoted as saying that officials “need our citizens’ help” in reporting crime. Apparently this notion of information flow is a one-way street in Millersville. Some of these break-ins happened in the dead of night, while homeowners were sleeping. Some involved older people. Don’t residents have the right to know about these crimes, so they can be alert and protect themselves? Want citizens to help? Tell them what’s happening.” – excerpted from the editorial in today’s Lancaster Sunday News.
