today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!

Quote for today“Writing in a diary is a really strange experience for someone like me. Not only because I’ve never written anything before, but also because it seems to me that later on neither I nor anyone else will be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl.” – Anne Frank (June 20, 1942)

  • Lancaster General full page ad in the Sunday News extols safety.
  • This week’s restaurant inspections in  Lancaster County cites too many restaurants with too many issues. Uncommon & unclean, too. Some places operating as restaurants just do not seem to understand the relationship betweek cleanliness and food safety. Columbia’s McDonalds; Uncommon Pizza in Lititz follow-up inspections are as dismal as the initial inspections. – Lancaster Sunday News
  • Lack of transparency and information flow in Millersville, too. “A burglary spree has folks in Millersville and Manor Township on edge after at least 19 break-ins over the last few months, as the Sunday News reported last week. Too bad it took the newspapers to let other citizens know about the crime wave. Before an Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era story last month, back when the burglary count stood at about a dozen, the only reports about the trouble were through word of mouth. ‘In June, Millersville residents went to borough council to complain that they were being kept in the dark about crime, particularly the burglaries. Mayor Richard Moriarty acknowledged the problem but said he and police made a conscious decision not to change the borough’s policies on reporting crime to citizens.” “The mayor also was quoted as saying that officials ‘need our citizens’ help’ in reporting crime. Apparently this notion of information flow is a one-way street in Millersville. Some of these break-ins happened in the dead of night, while homeowners were sleeping. Some involved older people. Don’t residents have the right to know about these crimes, so they can be alert and protect themselves? Want citizens to help? Tell them what’s happening.” – excerpted from the editorial in last week’s Lancaster Sunday News.
