Watermelon
PEAK SEASON | BEST FLAVOR | VALUE PRICED
Local Watermelon: your dessert is now covered for every night this week.
“You probably had some Watermelon at Memorial Day and 4th of July and maybe a time or two in between. But the next several weeks are set to be one of the very best times of the year for enjoying peak season, local Watermelons. Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania farms are picking their best melons and lopes right now! The jumbo-sized Lancaster County, PA grown Seedless Watermelon I cut on Saturday was so juicy, so red and sweet – it was hard to find restraint.
“August is also the time of year to keep an eye out for golden-fleshed Yellow Dolls, fresh and bright Yellow Seedless, good ol’ seed-spitter Sangria’s and dark-green-skin Sugar Baby Watermelons, if you’d like to branch off from the standard Seedless. Watermelons make wonderful warm weather desserts, snacks, salads and beverages.
There’s no magic to selecting a Watermelon. It’s up to the farmers and harvesters to pick them at the right time and for stores/distributors to inspect them well. Find one that is relatively symmetrical, feels heavy (watermelons are 92% water) and has a creamy yellow spot underneath (showing it ripened in the sun and that’s the spot where it sat on the ground). Avoid Watermelons that feel spongy. And go ahead – thump away if you like… it’ll make people think you know what you’re doing!
