- The Flashback Lancaster column in today’s Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/New Era carried this tidbit from 1912: “The Intelligencer reported on the results of an unusual contest in Columbia. The town’s children were enlisted in a fly-swatting contest for cash and prizes. They were encouraged to slay as many of the buzzing beasties as possible in one month’s time and turn over the deceased insects to judges to be counted. In total, the children of Columbia killed a staggering 414,200 flies in the month allotted, though the Intell did not report individual tallies. (Aug. 15, 1912)”

- Nathan Rodkey of Columbia, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Shrader of Northumberland and the late Edward Rodkey and a graduate of Hempfield High School, was selected for a Board of Governors academic achievement scholarship at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
