  • Another break-in, just across the river: “A Wrightsville resident called police Saturday after a would-be burglar ran through the victim’s home in the 300 block of Walnut Street, according to state police. A white man wearing blue jeans and a black hoodie threw a brick through a glass window and reached his hand in to try to open a door when he was spotted by the resident just before 6 a.m., according to a news release. The man ran through the home and out a back door, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call Trooper Ryan Wildermuth at 717-428-1011 and reference incident H07-2150886.” – York Daily Record

  • POLICE LOG:RAPHO TWP.: Jarred A. White, 21, of 1042 Lancaster Ave., Columbia, was charged with simple assault/reckless endangerment after a Sept. 5 incident in Lancaster Estates, Manheim Borough police said. Police said White, as he was leaving the scene after an argument with the victim, struck the victim with the passenger door of his vehicle, knocking the victim to the ground and causing injuries. – MANHEIM TWP.: Jeffrey W. Rice Sr., 55, of Wrightsville, was charged after allegedly creating a disturbance in the 2700 block of Long Farm Lane Sept. 7.” – Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/New Era

  • Noticed this at the Lancaster County Historical Society Website: “For the railroad aficionados, there’s the John D. Denney, Jr. Collection. Denney, a Columbia native and well-known railroad historian, wrote several articles about railroads and trolleys for the society’s Journal. This collection, from his estate, contains nearly 1,000 images of trains, trolleys, stations and railroading subjects from the county, the state and across the country.”
  • LEGAL NOTICE, published in the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/New Era, September 20, 2012, “Walnut Street CDBG Sealed bids for the construction of curb and storm sewer, along with street reconstruction will be received by the Borough of Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, at the Columbia Borough offices located at 308 Locust Street, Columbia, PA 17512, until 10:00 a.m. (prevailing time) on Thursday, October 4, 2012. The bids will be publicly opened and read at 10:00 a.m. (prevailing time), same date. Columbia Borough Council will award the contract to the lowest qualified and responsible bidder at its public meeting on October 8, 2012 at 7:00 P.M. in the Borough Hall at the above address. Copies of the plans, specifications and other documents are on file and open to public inspection and may be  obtained from C.S. Davidson, Inc., Consulting Engineers, 315 West James Street, Suite 102, Lancaster, Pennsylvania 17603 (Phone: 717-481-2991), during business hours (8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday). A pre-bid conference will be held at Columbia Borough offices, 308 Locust Street, Columbia, PA 17512 on Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 at 10:00 am. Each bidder must be prepared to submit evidence of his qualifications to perform the work. The construction of this project is being funded, in part, by a federal grant provided to Lancaster County from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. The attention of all bidders is called to the fact that, as a federally funded project, the construction contract is required by the Federal Labor Standards; better known as the Davis-Bacon Act. This act requires the successful contractor, and all of his or her sub-contractors, to pay laborers and mechanics employed on this project not less than the minimum wages and fringe benefits stipulated in the contact documents. All bidders must ensure that employees, and applicants for employment, are not discriminated against because of their race, creed, color, ethnic or national origin, sex, age or religion. All bidders must comply with the requirements of Section 3 of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968, 12 U.S.C. 170 lu. This act, in general, requires that the successful contractor, to the greatest extent feasible, provide business and employment opportunities to low and moderate income project area residents and Section 3 Businesses. The Section 3 Action Plan, which is made a part of this contract by reference, further explains the bidder’s responsibilities under Section 3. All bidders are advised that Attachment B Certification of Commitment from the Action Plan must be submitted with the bid documents. Any bid that does not contain a properly executed Attachment B will be rejected as non-responsive. Qualified Minority and Women Owned Businesses (MBE/WBE) are encouraged to respond to the Invitation to Bid. Bidders should refer to federal and state statutes, rules and regulations dealing with the prevention of environmental pollution and the preservation of public and natural resources pursuant to PA Act No. 1972-247.
