Quote for today“The idea was to shame people. You know how shame works now. It just doesn’t.” – Mary C. Fleming, Pittsburgh’s inspections bureau’s assistant chief of code enforcement, in an article about a councilor’s suggestion to embarrass slum landlords. – Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

  • O-U-T-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G: PennWATCH – an open window into YOUR state government – “It’s your money, find out how it is being spent.  PennWATCH lets you keep tabs on the state budget, spending, revenue, employees and performance – all in one website!” [Shouldn’t all government, including local governance, Websites look like this?]
  • Lancaster’s mayor’s response to the NRA proposal: “Today, in a bizarre and chilling press conference, the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre offered a plan to install armed guards in every U.S. elementary school. ‘The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,’ he said. But he was dead wrong. Just before that press conference took place in the nation’s capital, a gunman shot and killed three people, and wounded three state troopers in Blair County, Pennsylvania. It’s never been more clear to me that the gun lobby’s vision for this country is not just misguided; it poses a danger to all of us. There are 12,000 gun murders every year in the U.S. To stem that violence, we need to require a criminal background check for every gun sale and keep military-style weapons off our streets. But the absolute last thing we need is more guns near our first-graders. If that’s the NRA’s top solution, then I’d recommend that responsible gun owners in Pennsylvania find themselves a more rational organization to support.’” – Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/New Era
  • Another response: “Good grief..there could have been no worse response by the NRA. If this is there answer, why stop at schools? Why not have armed guards at community parks, kid friendly restaurants, day care businesses, roller rinks, Monkey Joe’s, etc, etc… ” – One of the more than 225 comments to this Harrisburg Patriot-News article.
