- Columbian: about Spooky Nook. The Scribbler column in today’s Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/New Era states: “The Scribbler provided three stories about the origin of Spooky Nook (as in Spooky Nook Road) in the Jan. 15 column. Now comes a more definitive commentary from the late John D. Denny Jr., the railroad historian of Columbia. Denny told Gerald S. Lestz, the former Scribbler in this space, that he had found an 1863 issue of a Reading & Columbia timetable that lists “Spook House” as a station stop. The stop was near the old plank “Spook House” that still stands at the corner of Spooky Nook and Shenck roads in East Hempfield Township. Denny said that reference ‘is probably the only instance that such a name was given to a railroad station stop in the history of American railroading.’’’
