- “The Lancaster New Era reported (on March 1, 1963) on fears of a springtime flood along the Susquehanna River. The ice on the river, which was frozen solid from shore to shore, was measured at 19 inches thick, a bit thicker than the 12 to 18 inches typical at the time. Years when the ice was thicker often were associated with flooding during the spring thaw — in 1904 and 1936, severe flooding from the rapid thaw of thick ice caused massive property damage in communities along the river. In 1936, the year of the worst flooding, the ice on the river was measured at 24 inches thick.” – Lancaster Intelligencer Journal/New Era
