“What began as a group of people looking for an opportunity to play ultimate frisbee in the Columbia area has grown, 10 years later, into a much-anticipated summer league. According to Matt Horn, who co-founded what became the Columbia Ultimate Frisbee League with Matt Riggleman, approximately 100 players – some traveling from as far as an hour away – have participated in the league each year.
“With the league’s 10th season approaching, Horn, the league president, invites more players to sign up. As in previous years, players who sign up individually will be entered into a new player draft, which will take place at a team-captains-only gathering on Saturday, May 18. New this year, though, is the option for entire teams to sign up together. ‘This year, we’re trying to expand,’ Horn said, explaining that the new option may encourage friends to put a team together and join the league.
“The league is seeking eight total teams, with a minimum of 10 players and a maximum of 12 players. A minimum of five players must be on the field at a time. Men and women age 15 and up are welcome to sign up, with a set per-player fee to include a jersey. Horn noted that teams and individual players must sign up by Friday, May 17. Registration is available by visiting www.columbia-ultimate.com or by contacting Horn at hornm16@yahoo.com or 413-3678.
“Ultimate frisbee, also known simply as ‘ultimate,’ is an active, non-contact sport that combines various elements of both football and soccer. ‘Ultimate thrives on the spirit of the game,’ said Horn. ‘Players police themselves and call their own fouls.’ Games will take place on fields that are 40 yards wide and 120 yards long, which includes two 25-yard end zones and 70 yards of playing field. Locations this year will include Glatfelter Field, located along Lancaster Avenue (Route 462) in Columbia, and Manor Church, located off Manor Church Road in Mountville.”
