At Monday’s borough council meeting, the council approved the appointment of the borough council president’s wife to become the interim tax collector.

In the May primary election, two Republican candidates received votes for the elected position of tax collector; Mary Wickenheiser received 148 and Norman Meiskey III received two write-in votes.

Eight Democrats received one write-in vote each: Barry Wickenheiser, Don Murphy, Elaine Beckley, M. Wickenheiser, Michael A.   • “In boroughs and town ships, the tax collector may hold no other elective municipal office.”
  • “In boroughs with populations with more than 3,000, the tax collector may not also serve as a borough employee.”

Vacancies of the tax collector position are addressed on page 5.

Deputy tax collector: “A tax collector may appoint one or more deputy tax collectors with the approval of the taxing district and the surety. Persons so appointed must be depu tized in writ ing. Deputy tax collec tors are autho rized to receive and collect taxes with the same author ity as the appoint ing tax collec tor. There are no particular qualifications for a deputy. Obviously the person must have the confidence of the tax collector, the taxing districts and the surety. The law makes the tax collector responsible for all taxes collected and received by any deputies appointed.” – page 17
