today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!
Quote for today… “But there’s a more basic story here, and it’s being replicated across America: Americans are segregating by income more than ever before. Forty years ago, most cities (including Detroit) had a mixture of wealthy, middle-class, and poor residents. Now, each income group tends to lives separately, in its own city — with its own tax bases and philanthropies that support, at one extreme, excellent schools, resplendent parks, rapid-response security, efficient transportation, and other first-rate services; or, at the opposite extreme, terrible schools, dilapidated parks, high crime, and third-rate services.” – Extract from Robert Reich column, “Detroit and the bankruptcy of America’s social contract.”

- Isn’t it interesting that many communities use the changing, available media resources to reach out to their citizens. In many communities, the police departments serve their citizens using regular updates on their facebook pages. Manheim’s Police Department with a recently begun facebook page lists found dogs, for instance. West Hempfield, Ephrata and the Northwest Regional departments use theirs as a citizen information platform to keep people informed and to dispel rumors. Columbia’s last post: over two years ago!
