today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!
Quote for today… ” … right-wing Catholics ‘generally have not been really happy’ with Francis.” – Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput said in this article from the Harrisburg Patriot-News.
- It can always get worse: “Potty-mouthed, video-making, gun-shooting police Chief Mark Kessler will be back patrolling the streets of this Schuylkill County coal town in 30 days. This after the Gilberton Borough Council voted 5-1 tonight to suspend him without pay for his profanity laced appearance in YouTube videos shooting off guns belonging to the borough. – Harrisburg Patriot-News
- Saw an article about “dragon boat races” – h-m-m-m, would that be something a town with a river could consider? A few visionaries introduced dragon races in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in 2000. Since then it’s evolved into an “event” that has helped to infuse identity, vitality and economic impact into this once “dead” river and blue collar community outside Providence. There’s a great bike/walk trail too and another being completed.
- There’s a lengthy legal ad from Columbia Borough in today’s Lancaster newspaper dealing with new ordinances: “the definition of disruptive conduct” and to consider authorizing the execution of an agreement among Lancaster County, Columbia and Marietta Boroughs and Conoy, East Donegal and West Hempfield Townships pertaining to the Lancaster County River Trail. Both of these topics will be “considered for passage” at the August Council meeting on August 12 which begins at 7:00 pm.
- “Section 7. Freedom of Press and Speech; Libels – The printing press shall be free to every person who may undertake to examine the proceeding of the Legislature or any branch of government, and no law shall ever be made to restrain the right thereof. The free communication of thoughts and opinions is one of the invaluable rights of man, and every citizen may freely speak, write and print on any subject, being responsible for the abuse of that liberty.“ – The Pennsylvania Constitution
- Robert Reich column: Why we should stop subsidizing sky-high CEO pay.
- At the Lancaster Host: “World Boardgaming Convention brings together about 1,500 people from around the world compete to be named champion of their favorite games, participate in open gaming, buy items from vendors, auction and auction store, learn new games, and meet up with old and new friends.” – ConsimWorld

Well this should be interesting, changing the definition of “disruptive conduct”. Wonder who Leo is catering to now?
