today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!

Quote for today“I don’t think you can put the insect repellent away this spring. This isn’t their first rodeo.” – Greg Hoover, Penn State Extension ornamental entomologist, in this article that says the winter’s extreme cold will not result in fewer bugs this summer.

  • Columbia’s boy’s basketball team is ranked second: 2013-2014 PIAA District III Boys Basketball Power Rating. But … what’s TWWP and OWWP? “The system is based on a perfect score of 1.000.” That number is actually unachievable, because an undefeated team cannot beat all undefeated teams all season. The higher the number to 1.000, the higher the ranking a team has. There are two components to the rating system, called Team’s Weighted Winning Percentage (TWWP) and Opponent’s Weighted Winning Percentage (OWWP). The TWWP numbers are derived based on classification and result for TWWP. The OWWP numbers are derived based on the total of your opponents’ records.”
  • Yesterday’s touch of snow was just another “head slap” reminder that Mother Nature is in the ring. Funny that the Almanac says “Storm system brushes the coast with a with a touch of unsettled weather.” Check out the National Weather Service forecast for the next few days here and contrast that with “Deep storm moves northeast with rain and snow. Frigid air follows with a significant freeze.” Funny weird, huh?
  • ” … poor behavior is not exclusive to renters,” says the editorial in today’s Lancaster New Era. The editorial chides and brings into question the fairness of the borough’s decision to impose indiscriminate “tough guy” tactics against landlords and tenants.
  • There’s a letter to the editor in today’s Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era in which the writer claims to have witnessed a PennDOT snow plow driver clearing a VFW parking lot in Gap. Funny, huh? We wonder whether PennDOT snow plow drivers insure summer time employment by knocking down road signs and markers in the wake of their winter time snow removal antics.
