today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!

Quote for today “”This wasn’t an easy choice. The envelope was being pushed and I had had enough and thought we needed to reset. I wanted to make sure the players knew what the priorities were when playing for me and playing at Juniata.” – Pat Shawaryn, Juniata College’s head men’s volleyball coach. (LNP – Always Lancaster article)

  • Good news. Pennsylvania’s primary elections are on the horizon. The election process in this state need to be fixed for sure. But, here’s where citizens get a chance to have a say in electing people with good character into office and getting people with bad character out of office. Arguably, people with bad character serving in leadership roles in cities across this country can be held responsible for inequity, poverty, injustice and the tragic outcomes regularly seen.
  • Bad news. Incomplete and inconsistent reporting in these LNP – Always Lancaster articles. Read the comments following this capsized boat in the Susquehanna article. How come this article names the person who was killed as a result of a traffic accident, but not the vehicle driver(s) responsible for the traffic accident that led to the death of the person who was killed?
  • In Lancaster County, a slew of violations at a slew of eating places – some are especially disturbing. “The person in charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this noncompliant inspection.” “The sushi fish was thawing in designated hand-wash sink.” “The men’s room needs a thorough cleaning.” “The person in charge is not performing the duties as required by the PA food code to maintain active managerial control of food safety in this facility.” “The person in charge is not performing the duties as required by the PA food code to actively manage food safety.” “The facility operator has failed to post an original, valid PDA food employee certification in a location conspicuous to the consumer.” … and on and on and on ad nauseam.
  • A complete listing of all inspections at food serving facilities in Lancaster, York counties and the entire state, except those in Columbia, are listed at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Website. “Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Also, at the time of the inspection, violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. Inspection results are posted as inspections are conducted, and only represent eating and drinking establishments and retail food establishments that fall under the inspection jurisdiction of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and those county and local health departments which have elected to post results.” Of course, if you’re trying to see the results of any food serving establishment in Columbia, you’re out of luck.
