Rep. Hickernell clearly represents corporations more than the people he supposedly represents.
Pennsylvania is the only state that does not have a severance tax for natural gas companies who do fracking. The Republicans in the state legislature argue that if we were to add a severance tax, the gas companies would leave the state because it would no longer be profitable for them to continue. Governor Wolf has urged them to approve this tax. As the saying goes, “There is gold in them thar hills, and we’re a gonna get it.” The Republican argument makes no sense. The companies will remain here because there is a huge amount of natural gas that can be extracted from the “hills” of Pennsylvania. This severance tax would bring in lots of dollars for such things as education and infrastructure. This is not a tax on the people, rather it is a tax FOR THE PEOPLE.
