today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!

Quote for today… “The chief operator was to blame for what happened, and we let him go.” – Tom Acri, borough mayor and vice president of the water authority, comment from this Harrisburg Patriot-News article about a Steelton’s water problems. [Columbia news, views & reviews‘ NOTE: Could this be what happens when there’s a small “circle of control” (the mayor’s also the president of the water authority) in charge? When not all the information comes out until a public safety incident does harm to the citizens?]

  • A letter writer in the letters-to-the editor in today’s Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era says, some politicians, would “forget, obfuscate, hedge, hide, engage in wishful thinking and try to put the best face of things.”

  • In war and in politics, “history is recorded by the victors.” This statement, or some variation of it, is often “attributed to Winston Churchill, but of unknown origin.” The point is, as the mayor/president of the water authority above, gets to make the comment and not the deposed chief operator, it becomes history. As we know, more is discovered about “his-story” in subsequent generations.
  • Sobriety checkpoints will be held in York and Lancaster counties this weekend, according to the Center for Traffic Safety.” – The York Dispatch
  • The Center for Traffic Safety develops and implements comprehensive community traffic safety programs intended to reduce the incidence of traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths. – Center for Traffic Website Website
  • “A third myth is that the poor are drug addicts. Unfortunately, the poor cannot afford to buy drugs.” One of the examples from this Website: “Shit My Students Write – Evidence of the true cost of educational funding cuts.” The Website could be produced by someone who teaches. If it’s really an example of student writing or responses to exams or tests, could it be a harbinger of tomorrow’s political leadership? In any event, the samplings are pathetic … but funny.
  • Another: “America was the first country to join the European Union. Great Britain was the second.”
