signs around town

We promised to share some pictures about some of the signs we saw while ambling about town recently. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word sign has this origin: “‘from L. signum ‘mark, token, indication, symbol,’ from PIE base *sekw- ‘point out’. Meaning ‘a mark or device having some special importance.’

So, here are some “marks having some special importance.”

We saw these signs …

[NOTE:] On the way to market today (March 31) , we noticed the “condemned sign” at 29 North Fourth Street is no longer displayed and there appears to be activity inside; looks like a retail business is readying to open. Walked past the Locust Street property and that sign is gone too.

We saw bad signs (a badly frayed United States flag is always a bad sign) …

The Flag of the United States  should be displayed in tatters; for more on the history, proper display and procedures for the United States Flag, click here. To send a gentle reminder about the display of a tattered flag, click here.

but we saw a lot more good signs …

And from just east of Columbia, Blockbuster closing …

  1. Happy to see some of these signs like the church but others most definitely should have to go. Those “home made” signs in windows look terrible!
