This is the fourth article in a series that began on Friday, August 26. In early 2005, the results of a market study for the Columbia Market House were revealed.
In this week’s installation of this series, we list the consultant’s presentation of the recommended capital improvements of the Revitalized Columbia Public Market.
“A beautifully restored market will not bring in people on a regular basis … it is the lasting quality of the experience and what occurs socially and culturally which will draw people and which will justify the expenditure of public funds.” – page 41
The consultant’s recommendation continues, “Capital improvements are a step, but people power and a grounded optimism are what will bring the market back to life. Flexibility is the key and a vision and commitment to constantly keep the market fresh and alive. These are people skills and they are what will make the market work.” Click here to read the Capital Improvements suggestions made, including these
-
“keeping the roof windows operable”
-
keeping all the pot belly stoves
-
Laying electrical lines underneath the brick floor
-
Use the mezzanine for a “market office, public seating or viewing”
-
Identify someplace for storage of tables, chairs, etc.
-
Provide “serious upgrading” or rebuild the public restrooms. “The market needs first rate public bathrooms.”
-
Use the Borough Farm as a “community based farm for allotments and education.”
Columbia news, views & reviews will delve into these findings over the next several weeks on Thursdays.
