- Lawn and garden tip: When is the best time to cut back butterfly bushes and burning bushes? Also, how far back can we cut them?
The answer to that question comes from the Harrisburg Patriot-News: End of winter (late March to early April) is the best time to prune both… right before new growth starts. Butterfly bushes can go back as far as ankle high if you want to keep them as compact as possible. They can also be dead-headed (remove spent flowers) or overly long branches can be snipped back one by one as needed during the growing season.Burning bush is best thinned out and then shortened with pruners branch by branch for the most natural look. But most people just get out the shears and cut them back by one-half or one-third all the way around. That won’t kill the plants, but you’ll get a lot of dense growth and a shape that looks like a big ball or oval.
