Scores of Sunday newspapers across the country publish “The Wall Street Journal Sunday” pages. These pages carry interesting articles for people who want more insight or research on investing, retiring, saving and more. This week’s pages featured a main article entitled, “Dig Deeper When Checking Out Smaller Charities.”
The article cautions readers to make sure to do the research before contributing to smaller, lesser-know “charities.” “The biggest challenge may be getting a handle on a small charity’s financials. Many organizations post their IRS Form 990 on their websites along with any audited financial statements. They also should provide a ‘Letter of Determination’ from the IRS that shows the group has been granted tax-exempt status. One caveat: A charity can lose its tax-exempt status and still hold onto the letter.”
