A citizen called a few days ago and said, “Next time you’re at Hinkle’s, look across Locust Street. You won’t believe it. There’s a boarded window with a dryer vent sticking out.”
The caller went on to comment that this is what visitors and citizens see on the “main street” of Columbia. The citizen’s concern, naturally, is one of image. What is the message that’s sent to visitors of Columbia’s “main” street – Locust Street?
“Shouldn’t Locust Street the “best-foot forward” street?” wondered the citizen.
The caller continued, “Can’t the historic board do something about this kind of thing?”
We do not know the answer to that, but we will ask at the next H.A.R.B. (Historic Architectural Review Board) meeting.
Much better site a block away
The building (the former M&T Bank site) that’s undergoing major rehabilitation at 4th & Locust offers a bright contrast and promise for a resurgent destination street.
potential for a better scene across the street
Across the street from the boarded window with the vent is a “now vacant” property that has the same possibility for physical enhancement. 207-209 Locust Street has several postings on the door.
One is a codes violation notice posted by the borough; it’s a little hard to see because the photo was taken through the screen door.
The other is a notice posted by the bank which acquired the property at a sheriff’s sale in October, 2011.

My understanding on the window with the dryer vent is being looked at by the codes department.
it’s my property and I will do what I want to, do what I want to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
