Specialty Snacking Tomatoes
There are some really tasty new varieties of Specialty Snacking Tomatoes available these days and they’re in peak season right now! Greenhouses in USA, Mexico and especially Canada during the Spring provide the perfect environment for growing these flavorful and colorful little Tomatoes. These bite-sized varieties make excellent sides for your lunch, are good on top of salad greens and add color to vegetable trays. Here are some to look for:
- Zima: Orange in color, super-sweet, dangerously addictive little round snackers.
- Kiss: Red, Yellow and Orange types that are have a seam on the bottom that makes them look kinda like lips – ha! Sweeter than regular Grape Tomatoes with rich flavor.
- Gourmet Medley: Mixed mini Heirloom-style Tomatoes – brown, yellow, pink and red – ranging from sweet to robust to earthy in flavor.
- Amorosa: Sold still on the vine. Bigger than a Grape Tomato but smaller than a Roma. Juicy, rich and sweet.
- Campari: More of a Salad Tomato, but I love the full-throttle-tomato-flavor of Campari so much that I like to snack on them too!

Spring is in the air. Everyone wants berries! And the Organic Strawberries from Mexico and Southern California are tasting great right now. Growers are fighting to keep up with the current demand which is high, but the Organic Strawberries you find at stores are likely to be firm, have good red color and pleasing flavor the next few weeks. Keep berries cold in the fridge but away from the blowing air, and only wash them just before use since water tends to speed up decay on the fruit.
