Columbia in a few years and YP at THE

Following Tuesday night’s Council “committee-of-the-whole” meeting, Columbia news, views & reviews was given the opportunity to take a close-up look at the updated Route 441 project photo. Using the photo with the surprinted new Route 441 (below), Councilor Mary Wickenheiser and Mayor Leo Lutz proudly pointed out some of the items noted below.
According to the Borough Website, “A public meeting was held on July 15, 2009, to discuss the relocation of State Route 441 to a new alignment outside the Borough’s historic downtown. The project is designed to reduce the number of vehicles that travel through downtown Columbia. Large and heavy trucks generate vibration that potentially undermines the foundations of some of the Borough’s oldest structures. In addition, the trucks’ travel through the downtown area has caused multiple accidents with other vehicles and pedestrians, and contributes to air and noise pollution in the Borough. The relocation would reduce the number of trucks by approximately 600 per day.”

“You don’t cap out on the age limit of our group,” 28-year-old Ian Anderson of Columbia says. “We have people older than 50, but you do have to be 21.”

The group of more than 130 members, Lancaster Young Professionals has an “calendar online, www.lyp.org, (which) shows an event or social activity is on tap almost every week of every month.”

  1. I will believe the re-route when I see it. This was originally proposed for completion by 2008-09, then derailed by a councilman, then back on the board for completion by 2012.
