Send a message urging the SEC to require public disclosure of corporate political spending, and to do so this year.
Super PACs are a problem, but they at least are required to publicly disclose where their political spending comes from (as are labor unions).
Corporate America, however, has ways to keep its spending in the dark.
As a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s reckless ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, corporations can keep their political spending secret simply by funneling their political dollars through trade groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and dark money outfits like Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS.
If the likes of Walmart, Exxon Mobil, Bank of America and Monsanto are using their corporate billions to distort our democracy, the American people should be able to find out and hold those corporations accountable.
Tell the SEC to require corporations to disclose their political spending, and to do so this year.
