In the June 20, 1863 issue of The Columbia Spy, “Captain C. C. Haldeman of Columbia, PA is hereby authorized to raise troops and assume command of the same, for the defense of Columbia, Pa, the Bridges, Dams, and Fords in the Susquehanna river in the vicinity.” Click on the article below (a tad hard to read) to read the local newspaper’s account of the beginning of the call to arms for Columbia as the Confederate forces began the “invasion of Pennsylvania.”
