today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!

Quote for today … We’ll fix this.” – Penn State football coach, James Franklin, said again and again during the post-game press conference. – The Daily Collegian

  • The difference between “iterated” and “reiterated” – We noticed the word “reiteration” in an article; since we prefer using the word iteration to mean “to say or do again or again and again,” and the context of the article inferred that, we wonder why the writer chose to say “reiteration.” This correct English usage source says: “The form ‘reiterate’ is most commonly heard in everyday speech, but crept into the language through what’s known as hypercorrection: correcting something which is already right. ‘Iterate’, on its own, already means ‘to say or perform again/repeat something’. However, many people do not know this, so they add ‘re’ to the word, thinking that this will give the ‘again’ element.”
  • Often we hear folks, especially folks in the public and governmental sectors, saying they utilized something when, frankly, they used something.  A previous Columbia news, views & reviews post: “These ‘low esteem’ verbifications perplex us. So, too, do those folks who embrace ‘utilize’ when ‘use’ might be the better choice?”
  • A complete listing of all inspections at food serving facilities in Lancaster, York counties and the entire state, except those in Columbia – Columbia persists in having its own inspection system with its own forms and inspection items – rather than the one used statewide, is available at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Website.
