- The difference between “iterated” and “reiterated” – We noticed the word “reiteration” in an article; since we prefer using the word iteration to mean “to say or do again or again and again,” and the context of the article inferred that, we wonder why the writer chose to say “reiteration.” This correct English usage source says: “The form ‘reiterate’ is most commonly heard in everyday speech, but crept into the language through what’s known as hypercorrection: correcting something which is already right. ‘Iterate’, on its own, already means ‘to say or perform again/repeat something’. However, many people do not know this, so they add ‘re’ to the word, thinking that this will give the ‘again’ element.”
- Often we hear folks, especially folks in the public and governmental sectors, saying they utilized something when, frankly, they used something. A previous Columbia news, views & reviews post: “These ‘low esteem’ verbifications perplex us. So, too, do those folks who embrace ‘utilize’ when ‘use’ might be the better choice?”
- “In December of 1989, the conference agreed in principle to invite Pennsylvania State University for membership. On June 4, 1990, the Council of Presidents officially voted to integrate Penn State into the conference, giving the Big Ten 11 members.” On September 4, 1993, in Penn State’s inaugural Big Ten game, Joe Paterno-coached Penn State beat Minnesota, 38-20. The next year, nearly that same team romped through its schedule undefeated … only to be No. 2 as Cornhusker-leaning voters named Nebraska the top team in the nation.
