today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!

Quote for today … “May we live to learn well, and learn to live well. May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live.” – a toast

  • It’s not that tough to operate openly and honestly. A volunteer fire company in York County has embraced “‘internal control procedures to ensure the timely deposit of all income received’ and maintained an inventory roster of all its equipment,” says this York Daily Record article.
  • On January 20th, 2015, Tom Wolf will be inaugurated as the 47th governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This website allows Pennsylvanians to sign up to volunteer to help with Inauguration Day activities.”
  • A Lancaster County woman who stole more than $30,000 from a Lebanon McDonald’s restaurant while she was an employee was ordered Wednesday to serve 10 months in county prison. Jessica Michael, 32, of Columbia, pleaded guilty to theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy.” – Lebanon Daily News
  • Thanks, Turkey Hill Minit Markets – According to this Lancaster Online article, “Turkey Hill Minit Markets said Wednesday it recently gave $102,000 to the Pennsylvania Veterans Foundation.” [NOTE: The Pennsylvania Veterans Foundations includes organizational and finances disclosures at its Website.]

  • No doubt about it … the new Trail Services Building is a wonderful addition for the borough. The structure’s beautifully designed and crafted. On the brisk last day of 2014 we took the above collection of mobile phone camera snapshots. The building is impressive and the view from the open deck faces The Bridge and The River. There appear to be an abundance of signage in Columbia River Park. Reckon Jocelyn figured that her weight loss sign would fit right in. Noticed the rail company’s multiple NO TRESPASSING signs by the rail tracks and the paved service road. Also noticed the addition of more spy cameras supposedly guarding the new structure. Wonder whether they’ll be more effective than the dozens that populate other parts of the borough? Wonder who’s watching the digital recordings of all these cameras? Also, noticed that there’s another light globe fixture missing from yet another pole in the park. Peeking into the building through the doors, we could see the remnants and vestiges of last week’s borough employees holiday party … the big inflatable Christmas balls (h-m-m-m, have we seen these before?) and some half-empty drink containers. Hopefully, organizations occupying the structure for occasions will have to clean up better than this. Aren’t electrical boxes supposed to have warnings and be secured: “Electrical panel boxes in commercial buildings should be locked and accessible by trained personnel only.”
