that was then …

before paranoia

“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” – inscribed on the Statue of Liberty

  1. A musical just opened on Broadway that is germane to what is happening concerning immigrants. It was written by Star Trek icon George Takai. He wrote this play to tell people what had happened to his and other Japanese-American families, most of whom were citizens of the United States of America, in 1941. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt ordered the roundup of all Japanese-Americans, who were then sent to interment camps far from their home. Mr. Takai and his family were moved from their home on the west coast to Arkansas, where they spent the next four years.

This past week 30 state governors, 29 Republican and one Democrat from New Hampshire, are using fear once again by calling for the prevention of immigrants from Syria to enter the country. These immigrants are fleeing terror in their country and wish to find a safe place in which to live and raise their families. Do we want fear to rule us? I think not.
