today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!

Quote for today … “Th’ newspaper does ivrything f’r us. It runs th’ polis foorce an’ th’ banks, commands th’ milishy, controls th’ligislachure, baptizes th’ young, marries th’ foolish, comforts th’ afflicted, afflicts th’ comfortable, buries th’ dead an’ roasts thim aftherward.” – The famous quote is about a hundred years old and can be traced to the work of Finley Peter Dunne, one of the great journalists of his day, who wrote about politics and culture in the voice and persona of an Irishman named “Mr. Dooley.” Above is full quote as Dunne penned it, best read aloud in the dialect of an Irish bartender. – Poynter Institute

A second quote for today … “So Saul took his sword and fell on it.” – The Bible, 1 Samuel 31:5

A third quote for today … “Finally, he [Brutus] spoke to Volumnius himself in Greek, reminding him of their student life, and begged him to grasp his sword with him and help him drive home the blow. And when Volumnius refused, and the rest likewise … grasping with both hands the hilt of his naked sword, he fell upon it and died.” – The Life of Brutus, Plutarch.

A fourth quote for today … “If he (Cocalico High School prinicpal, Christopher Irvine) were given $100,000, he would rather have that money go to a teacher than to have a resource officer patrolling the hallways.” – A quote by Junior Councilman Ken W. Wallace, 17, a senior who was recently honored by the Denver Lions Club as Student of the Month in an article in today’s Reading Eagle. [NOTE: What a cool idea; junior councillors!]

  • Nearly two pages of Legal Notices from municipalities and school boards and authorities and boards are in today’s LNP – Always Lancaster (the newspaper of general circulation). Newspaper of general circulation. “A newspaper issued daily, or not less than once a week, intended for general distribution and circulation, and sold at fixed prices per copy per week, per month or per annum, to subscribers and readers without regard to business, trade, profession or class.” – Also at this site: the requirements of Pennsylvania’s Newspaper Advertising Act which “Creates uniformity in the publication of legal notices, official advertisements, and advertisements, or abstracts of any notice, statement, or advertisement required by law, rule, order or decree of court to be published in a newspaper.”
  • Legal and public notices are also listed here, albeit somewhat delayed from the date of initial publication. – PublicNoticePA.com

  • The National Newspaper Association says, “Public notices in newspapers are part of the three-legged stool of government accountability. Public notices help to inform the public on activities by the government and other public entities. Public notices have been included in newspapers from the beginning of the Republic. Now they are also on many newspapers’ websites.”
  • It’s incredibly simple for municipalities and school boards or any organization treasuring transparency of information and notification to their stakeholders to include these notices on their own Websites. In fact, according to TITLE 45 : “the Local Government Commission may, in addition to or in lieu of printed publication and distribution, publish, maintain and update electronic copies … .” and those notices “shall be available on an Internet website maintained by the commission in a secure format accessible to the public and shall be updated within 60 days of the enactment of any amendment.”

fall on sword

  • Kinda’ makes a body wonder the practice isn’t place today for some elected public servants and others who screw up or screw people in humongous proportion?

erratic signals

  • Down by the tracks. It was tragic comedy yesterday afternoon watching the erratic performance of the railroad crossing boom gates.
  • Will Hackenberg be O’Brien’s QB? | “BILL O’BRIEN has the Texans leading their division without a quarterback. No way he is going to get fired. Watch out when he gets a good quarterback.” – PennLive fanline

browser useIt’s a bit hard to see in this graphic, but Google’s Chrome has been picking up browser users across the world apparently at the expense of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. The graph shows the data fro the past 12 months.
