today’s news and information gleanings from here and there! Today’s Weather!   Today in History!

Quote for today“A great wind is blowing, and that gives you either imagination or a headache. – Catherine the Great

  • “The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s final Sunday night concert has been moved to downtown Lancaster because of the park’s closure during Hurricane Irene. Jeffery Broussard and the Creole Cowboys will perform at Millersville University-Lancaster on North Prince Street at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 a.m., and seating in the 42 N. Prince St. facility is limited to 350 people. (LancasterOnLine.com)
  • Irene’s come and left some of us without power. We apologize for the lapse in posts; the power’s been off since 3:00 am. We’re posting from an alternate location. LancasterOnline now has live streaming video from three county locations: Columbia’s one of them. Thought: What if Columbia’s oodles of cameras were streaming at the Borough Website?
  • Lancaster Sunday News sports editor Mike Gross writes this from his full-page look at high school football: “The L-L’s top returning receiver is Columbia WR Mike Burke IV, son of the current and grandson of the former Columbia head coach, both also named Mike. Burke caught 72 balls last year for 1,185 yards and 16 TDs. He made all-state, and has verbally committed to Villanova. Columbia, by the way, also has a big-time QB, Tyler Harrison, and could be among the league’s more improved teams.”
  • The Restaurants and dining facilities inspections this week: Here is the report from York County. In Lancaster, there are some “well-known names” listed; it’s too bad that they evidently do not know or care about proper food handling. Here are the reports listed in today’s Sunday News; the Sunday News listings appeared on two pages (page one and page two) a fuller database of inspections appears at the LancasterOnline Website. All facilities in Lancaster and York counties, except those in Columbia, are listed at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture WebsiteAnd … there were no inspections conducted by Columbia’s enforcement officer during the month of July.
  • Big time country stars will be at FallFest – “Rodney Atkins is becoming a big name in country music, with a string of No. 1 hits to his credit. Teen Lauren Alaina, meanwhile, might be even more famous, having made it all the way to second place on last season’s ‘American Idol.’ The two are among the artists who will be performing at this year’s FallFest, Lancaster’s annual country-music extravaganza, organizers announced Friday. The 20th annual event will be held Sunday, Oct. 2, at Manheim Township’s Overlook Community Campus.” (LancasterOnline.com)
