Last Wednesday, the annual Our Lady of the Angels (OLA) school conducted its Spelling Bee and three winners emerged from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades from the tough field of qualifiers. Each of the classrooms have spell-offs within the class and the top winners are selected to participate in the actual bee.
Students who qualified for the spelling bee are shown above; in the front row, left to right: Vincent Palmieri, McKenna Munoz, Tessa Katalinas, Jillian Kemmerly, Brynn Kelly and Crista Ricci. Shown standing in the back row are Kimberly Horst, Angelo Quiles, Walter Katalinas, George Reich, Kayla Rivera, Clare Steinfelt, Shawn Helton and Aj Smith.
At the end of the competition, the girls shown below emerged as the grade champion spellers. Shown below are the third place winner, Tessa Katalinas (eighth grade); the first place winner, Jillian Kemmerly (seventh grade); and the second place winner, Brynn Kelly (eighth grade).
Jillian and Brynn will be taking the written test to determine whether they will compete in the Lancaster County Spelling Bee, sponsored by Lancaster Newspapers, Inc. NIE Program. Last year, Hannah Knowlton competed in the County Spelling Bee; Hannah, too, was from OLA.
