Today’s news … Wednesday, January 27, 2016

  • today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!

Quote for today … “Society would be much better off if the police  stings were targeted at dirty politicians and banksters that have robbed us, rather than this individual.” – Comment following this Pennlive article about an arrest for prostitution and “taunting the police.”

Second quote for today … “Does the borough generally schedule a time to plow up to the curb streets like Walnut, Chestnut, etc. or are we on our own for that? Legitimate question, no snarkiness.” – post at the “You know you’re from Columbia PA if … ” facebook page.

  • Wow, can you believe January’s almost gone!
  • Heard at Hinkle’s last night: “Columbia’s doing a much better job with snow removal than Wrightsville.” True enough, but it could be so much better if the borough would communicate with its citizens.
  • Let’s check out these Websites to find out what Columbia’s citizens can find out about current, accurate, relevant, updated snow info.
  • Columbia BoroughNO UPDATES HERE: “There is a snow emergency in effect starting at 7:00 pm ,Friday, January 22, 2016 until further notice. See police page for more information on emergency routes.”

  1. You often link to the “You Know You’re From Columbia” Facebook page, and while I would love to check it to see what’s going on in town, I was blocked by the group administrators one day. I had never even posted to it before but always enjoyed checking it out. Is it exclusive? I own a home here and work in this town. What am I missing?

    • Seems, too, Kathleen, there’s a lot more real on-the-ground “intel” (in military and law enforcement parlance, that’s referred to as HUMINT or human intelligence) there, certainly, than at the local law enforcement facebook page or the School District’s Website.

  2. Gee, I don’t know, Kathleen … facebook is something I know precious little about. It is an “open site” that states “An open group for those of us lucky enough to grow up in this crazy little town. Share your memories, the quirks, the joys, our shared past. We are happy to have people who have lived in or hung out in Columbia, but please READ THE GUIDELINES FOR POSTING before you post.”

Anyone should be able to view it; posting might be another issue.

Maybe a facebook-savvy reader will provide a little info on this.

  3. Oh my word!!!!! A possible increase in Columbia School taxes in the future, you must be kidding to suggest something so preposterous. The out of line school taxes in the borough are currently a burden, raising taxes is not the answer, CONTROLLING SPENDING IS!!!!

Energies toward consolidation of Columbia public schools should be the paramount, immediate objective.
