Heroin | a community conversation

In Everyday Living, Government, In Columbia, Opportunities, Uncategorized on May 22, 2016 at 8:43 am

This announcement is posted at the Columbia Police Department’s facebook page and at the Columbia Spy’s Website. It is an important community announcement that’s intended to get the attention of everyone in the community. Come to the Community Conversation on June 7 to learn about the heroin onslaught across Pennsylvania and here.

There’s an cogent comment at the Columbia Police Department’s facebook page:

Heroin doesn’t just kill, after you get in jail and take a prescription to subdue the urge, your life is still in chaos. You will be in debt for 20 years paying off your prison fees and fines and restitution. You will live with guilt and some day you must explain it to your children. Not me personally, someone I love very much.”

This Allentown Morning Call interview with Pennsylvania’s state prison system Corrections Secretary John Wetzel contains his equally telling observations about the doubly devastating outcomes when heroin users are jailed with no treatment provisions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says:

  • Heroin use more than doubled among young adults ages 18–25 in the past decade.
  • More than 9 in 10 people who used heroin also used at least one other drug.
  • 45% of people who used heroin were also addicted to prescription opioid painkillers.

Here’s an interesting article for more background on heroin; not just a modern societal phenomenon.
