Today’s news and information gleanings from here and there!
Today’s quote … “Tom Strickler is not qualified for this ‘bogus’ position, and his corporate experience has flat-lined many businesses.” – Comment following this Columbia Spy article: “Tom Strickler named Director of Operations at Columbia Borough School District.”

- At tonight’s council meeting, the next direction of the Columbia Historic Market House is on the list of agenda items shown at Columbia Spy.
- What’s on the Borough Website and what’s not! – At 5:52 am today, the notice about last week’s National Night Out is there – the DRAFT agenda for tonight’s council meeting is not. Now (8:42 am) the DRAFT agenda’s posted.
Cutting it close: the event’s advertised yet it’s on the Council meeting agenda tonite for approval.
- Commenter Paul Hines noted that the LNP – Always Lancaster Government Calendar contains info about two more blighted Columbia properties. Ought this notice not appear at the Borough Website, too?

This photo’s from the Columbia Crossing facebook page with this post: “Don’t forget Columbia River Park will be closed on Monday August 8th for paving! There are 20 new parking spots for trail users next to the 462 bridge.”
It’s the facebook cover photo for the Black Olive – the 24-hour restaurant at the corner of Route 462 and South 15th Street.
It’s one of those bothersome phrases and words used by traditional media. Along with “pundit” – we’re confused about what a “think tank” really is.
- Aha! The New York Times article helps “de-murkify” the he term: “Think tanks are seen as independent, but their scholars often push donors’ agendas, amplifying a culture of corporate influence in Washington.”
- Wikipedia‘s definition: “A think tank or policy institute, research institute, etc. is an organization that performs research and advocacy concerning topics such as social policy, political strategy, economics, military, technology, and culture. Most policy institutes are non-profit organizations, which some countries such as the United States and Canada provide with tax exempt status. Other think tanks are funded by governments, advocacy groups, or businesses, or derive revenue from consulting or research work related to their projects.“
- Another word for a place that provides prostitution services is a brothel.
- Pundits, according to googlesearch, are “experts in a particular subject or field who is frequently called on to give opinions about it to the public.” In a brothel, prostitutes are pundits.
- “The 50 Most Influential Think Tanks in the United States” – TheBestSchools.org [No doubt, a think tank? Wonder who pays the pundits who work in this mot-for-profit “leading resource for campus and online education?”]
- Mostly non-tax payers: “According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations are registered in the U.S. This number includes public charities, private foundations, and other types of nonprofit organizations, including chambers of commerce, fraternal organizations and civic leagues.” – Grantspace.org

In today’s LNP, the Lancaster County Planning commission is taking 2 more Columbia properties under consideration as blighted. Found on Page A6.
Wouldn’t it be great if this info would appear at the Borough Website as well? Thank you for sharing this, Paul.
We’ve posted a .pdf file of the notice at today’s news.
