  • Road trip continued. From Mojave, California. Got an early start from Gallup and decided to swing though the Petrified Forest National Park. Spectacular desert colors abound, especially in the morning. The scenery on the drive to Flagstaff is very pretty; if anyone wanted to move to Arizona, somewhere around here would be the place to consider. The drive from Flagstaff to Kingman gives an inkling of what’s to come. But the driving experience through the desert to Barstow, CA and to Mojave is accompanied by an almost immediate temperature spike to 107 degrees. The route is fully desert for an awfully long time. Interesting thing about Kingman and Mojave is that both have aircraft “boneyards.”  Edwards Air Force base and Ft. Irwin are along the route. Stopped to look around California City, too. (As of 2010, California City’s population is 14,841 people. Since 2000, it has had a population growth of 76.89 percent. SOURCE: bestplaces.net) FYI, gas prices have been on average $3.59 … at least until you get to California. Here the price is $3.89.

  1. Does Doolittle ever do anything with his properties other than knock them down or lose them in a sheriff sale? Just saying the guy is a joke. Get him out of our town

    • I’m not taking up for the guy, but the Columbia Kettle Works building belongs to Doolittle. I hear what you’re saying and don’t personally care if he loses them at a sheriff sale but there better not be anymore lost to demolition. We the taxpayers cannot afford to pick up anymore of his losses.

  2. Kettle Work’s isn’t open yet – so don’t count your eggs before they are hatched ! – but he did develop Burning Bridge, Taste of Styles, Taco Shop, the Ghost Musuem, Tollbooth Marketplace, and more, and all without grant money from what I hear. And he did move the Keystone Firehouse form a non profit back on to the tax rolls, and recently saved the beautiful piece of crap Becker Chip Factory that was slated for demolition and a parking lot, and a mansion on Second Street that was in ruins. So even though he missed his target on a few big projects, I have a hard time finding fault with someone that continues on against adversity in a blighted town with little to no other serious development activity.

  3. Easy partner! It sounds like you got a crush on him. Develop is a strong word to describe the taco shop and that bigfoot store on the corner. They are only one room big. I like the taco shop but the man making the tacos gets the credit. NOT Doolittle.

  4. certainly no crush – but I do some work for his company from time to time. For decades he has been successful in developing new business all over Lancaster County with little to no credit, and unfortunately he ran into some snags in Columbia.

The Taco space is actually more then “one room big”. The entire floor was renovated including an all new luxury apartment in the rear where the Taco man lives, and new mechanicals, hardwood floors, and brick work in the store – so, yeah, I would definitely say that Doolittle “developed the space ” !., but not the business.

  5. I’m not from Columbia, but I absolutely love the town and visit from time to time. I don’t know this Doolittle fellow personally, but I hear things from friends who do live there. That said… I have to say I’ve been to the Taco Shop. “Taco to Go”, I believe. And from what I understand, the most of the interior work was done by the owner of the Taco shop. Painting, decor, cooking equipment, all his. I say this because I remember the shop from a few years ago before he took it over. It was nothing to speak of. A bare room with attached apt. A consignment shop. Anyway… The couple who run the taco shop now have definitely put there hearts into it. It seems to me that any applause for the performance, are due the Taco Man and the woman behind the Taco Man. : )

  6. agreed, absolutely !, ” the couple who run the Toco shop” deserve applause, no doubt about it !, however, if you take a hard look at the condition that many of these various buildings were in before the vacant and/or depilated buildings were acquired and renovated, one would certainly conclude that the various property owners in town have quite a bit to do with the progression, not to mention any names. Not only by making renovations, but also by cutting affordable deals with the real hero’s the run the businesses. Weather you like the players or not, it really is a team effort that makes it all happen.

  7. Yeah buddy. You definitely work for him. Team effort my @$$. A friend of mine rented an apartment from him up in that big building on the corner across from Hinkles and he would not fix anything. The roof was leaking so bad that her and her family had to move out. I think its a bunch of bull to run around saying how great that guy is when he’s nothing but a SLUMLORD!

  8. I wouldn’t pay my rent either if my dirtbag landlord never fixed anything. If you got off his payroll long enough to take a look around you would be saying something very different Columbia Ghost. Ooops I mean Casper.
