A google earth shot (below) of the two bridges in service today.
The above picture is a page of the first span of the Susquehanna taken from the special memorial program when the then Route 30, now Route 462, bridge was dedicated in 1930. That program contains a wonderful historic narrative about all the previous bridge crossings beginning with the first one was constructed, not without financial challenges. That first bridge was completed and opened for traffic in 1814.
You can read the fascinating story of the bridges traversing the mighty Susquehanna, including a wonderful narrative about the bridge burning on that Sunday in 1863 by clicking on the program cover below. The story of the bridges begins on page 28.
On Veterans Day, 2011, Columbia news, views & reviews, was proud to publish an exceptionally well-researched and adroitly written article by Heather Shenk. Click here to read that article, The Bridge, with splendid accompanying photographs.
